HELP…..BAD snoring and breathing at night?

My 10 year old son has a real bad breathing problem at night when he sleeps. He breathes through his mouth because it sounds like he has an obstruction in his nose. I know my oldest had polyps removed for the same reason. Is there anything over the counter besides nose strips or spray to help this or is surgery my only option. It is really bad. He sometimes stops breathing for a second and then opens his mouth to breath. It sounds really uncomfortable and I know he does not get a good night sleep. I cant even stand it when I have a cold and have to breath through my mouth but he does this every night. I wish there was a home remedy I could try instead of dosing him with medication,. Thanks.
